Follow a position

The team’s job

Make one confident catch while teammates give space and cover the field.

One defined rotation for nine-player fastpitch. Follow your coach’s calls when your team uses a different system.

Why this rotation works

This example gives LF the catch. An outfielder who can make the play calls off the infielders; the remaining defenders fill coverage and backup responsibilities.

The goal

Make one confident catch while teammates give space and cover the field.

Watch for these mistakes

  • Calling late and creating a collision risk.
  • Continuing into the catch after another player with priority calls it.
  • Everyone chasing the pop fly and leaving the bases uncovered.

Walk it through at practice

Set the runners and call the situation before contact. Have each defender name their job, then walk through the rotation together. Repeat with the ball live and stop at the receiving position to check the cutoff, coverage, and backup.

If outfielders backpedal when the ball goes over their head, work on the drop step drill before returning to the full-team rotation.

How it works

  1. Read the situation. One out, bases empty. Identify the catch priorities.
  2. Locate the pop fly. Infielders pursue a reachable ball; the outfielder closes in.
  3. Call and clear space. LF calls for the catch. The nearby infielders yield and cover behind the play.
  4. Secure the catch. Finish the catch, then reset. If the ball drops, the covered bases and backups are ready.
