Basketball court size by level
Every court is measured to the inside edge of the boundary lines. College and NBA courts are the same size. High school and junior high courts are shorter.

| FIBA / international | 28 × 15 m | 91.9 × 49.2 ft | 420 sq m |
Basketball court line measurements
The 3-point line and restricted area are measured from the center of the basket. The free throw line is measured from the face of the backboard.

Half court basketball dimensions
A half court runs from the baseline to the half-court line and keeps the full width of the court.
NBA and college half court
Half of a 94 foot court. This is the size most people mean by a full-size half court.
High school half court
Half of an 84 foot court, with the same 50 foot width as college and the NBA.
Junior high half court
Half of a 74 by 42 foot court, the size found in many middle school and elementary gyms.
Backyard and driveway basketball court dimensions
Home courts do not have a required size. These are common sizes and what fits on each one. Keep the rim at 10 feet and place the backboard 4 feet in from the edge of the slab if you want real lane and free throw distances.
Once your hoop is set up, choose from these basketball drills to do at home for shooting, layups and ball handling in the space you have.
Driveway shooting pad
Enough room for the lane and a free throw line. Good for shooting, layups and one-on-one.
Small backyard court
Adds room around the lane for mid-range shots and 2-on-2. The 3-point line will not fit.
Backyard court with a 3-point line
Fits a high school 3-point arc (19 ft 9 in). The arc is about 39 ft 6 in wide, so run the 40 foot side along the baseline.
Basketball hoop and backboard dimensions
The top of the rim is 10 feet above the floor. The rim is 18 inches across and sits 6 inches in front of the backboard.
A regulation backboard is 6 feet wide and 3½ feet tall. The small rectangle above the rim is 24 inches wide and 18 inches tall. The face of the backboard is 4 feet in from the baseline.
If you coach younger players, USA Basketball recommends an 8 foot rim for ages 7 and 8 and a 9 foot rim for ages 9 to 11. The court lines usually stay the same. Our youth basketball drills are written for those courts.
Basketball court dimensions FAQ
What are the dimensions of a basketball court?
NBA and college courts are 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. High school courts are 84 by 50 feet, junior high courts are often 74 by 42 feet, and FIBA courts are 28 by 15 meters.
What are half court basketball dimensions?
A half court is 47 by 50 feet on an NBA or college court and 42 by 50 feet on a high school court. Home half courts are usually smaller, from about 20 by 20 feet up to 30 by 40 feet.
How far is the free throw line from the basket?
The free throw line is 15 feet from the face of the backboard at every level in the US. The inside edge of the rim is 6 inches from the backboard and the rim is 18 inches across, so the center of the basket is 15 inches out. That puts the line about 13 feet 9 inches from the center of the basket.
How tall is a basketball hoop?
The top of the rim is 10 feet above the floor in high school, college and the NBA. Many youth leagues lower the rim to 8 or 9 feet for younger players, so check your league rules.
How wide is the paint on a basketball court?
The paint, also called the lane or the key, is 12 feet wide in high school and college and 16 feet wide in the NBA. It runs 19 feet from the baseline to the free throw line.
How much space do you need around a basketball court?
The high school rule book asks for at least 3 feet of open space past the boundary lines, and 10 feet is better. Leave extra room behind each baseline so players do not run into a wall after a layup.
How big is a junior high basketball court?
Many junior high and middle school gyms are 74 by 42 feet, though some schools play on a full 84 by 50 foot high school court. The lines and rim height are usually the same as high school.
