Tryout guide

How to run a cricket tryout

Cricket trials usually combine a nets session with a fielding session. Give every player the same number of balls at each station, and keep the same evaluators on batting and bowling so the scores line up.

  1. 01

    Batting in the nets

Setup. 12 to 18 balls against a mix of pace and spin, or a bowling machine for younger players.

What to watch. A balanced stance, the head still over the ball, playing straight in defense, and picking the length early enough to go forward or back.

  2. 02

    Bowling

Setup. Two overs in the nets to a batter, or at a single stump for younger bowlers.

What to watch. A run-up and action they can repeat, how many balls land on a good length and line, and for spinners, how much they turn the ball while keeping control.

  3. 03

    Ground fielding and throwing

Setup. Roll balls to both sides, then have players pick up and throw to the keeper over the stumps.

What to watch. Getting the body behind the ball, a clean pick-up, and a flat, accurate throw.

  4. 04

    Catching

Setup. High catches and flat catches, either in pairs or hit by a coach with a bat.

What to watch. Soft hands, getting under the ball early, and calling for it.

  5. 05

    Wicketkeeping

Setup. For keepers only: take deliveries standing back and standing up to the stumps, plus throws from the field.

What to watch. Footwork, staying low until the ball arrives, and taking the ball cleanly without snatching.

  6. 06

    Match scenarios

Setup. A short game where every player bats for a couple of overs and bowls at least one.

What to watch. Running between the wickets, calling, and whether batters look for gaps in the field.

What a 1, 3 and 5 look like

Share this with evaluators before the tryout. When everyone scores against the same descriptions, you don't have to argue about whose 4 is right.

Category135
BattingSwings across the line at most balls and backs away from pace.Solid in defense but struggles to score against good-length bowling.Watches the ball onto the bat, plays straight, and chooses when to attack.
BowlingThe action changes ball to ball, with frequent wides and full tosses.Hits a good length about half the time.A repeatable action that lands most balls on a good line and length, with some variation.
FieldingStops the ball with the feet only and throws loopy or wide.Clean on balls hit straight at them, and slower moving to either side.Attacks the ball, picks up cleanly, and throws flat to the keeper.
Wicket keepingSnatches at the ball and gets up too early.Tidy standing back, but uneasy standing up to the stumps.Low, quiet hands that take the ball cleanly standing up or back.
OverallNeeds reminders to back up throws and to watch the batter.Knows their job and does it when the game is quiet.Backs up, calls clearly, and reads the game from anywhere on the field.

Adjusting the tryout by age

Under 11
Use a softer ball and shorter pitch if your league does. Score technique and catching over pace, since bowling speed grows quickly at this age.
11 to 15
Watch bowling workloads and keep each bowler to two overs. Score line and length ahead of speed.
16 and over
Add a short match on turf if you have one, and ask keepers to keep to your quickest bowlers.

From the leagues

Leagues talk.

Volunteer boards, real seasons, zero paper. In their own words.

Menifee Pony Baseball

We have about 900 players in our league, we do assessments and a draft for over 40 of our teams. Bravara was a huge time, energy and paper saver for us, so much better than the old way!

Mike A.
La Costa Youth Baseball

I find it pretty remarkable that we made the decision to use Bravara just a week before our evals, and then had the smoothest/easiest evaluation process we've ever had.

Drew L.
Lake Murray Little League

Our league has used the same old system for years and that all changed with Bravara. This app made our assessment and draft process a breeze. With Bravara there is no need for a pen and paper, which our staff really enjoyed. We will definitely be using the app in the many seasons to come. Thanks Bravara!

Travis D.
Westchester Del-Rey Little League

The application saved us a significant amount of time and contributed to forming balanced teams, which is always a win for our league. I also want to give a huge shoutout to Brian and Mike. The level of customer service they provided was second to none.

Jim E.
AYSO

Bravara has been a godsend for our AYSO Region in the terms of team formation and creating balanced teams.
