Tryout guide

How to run a rugby tryout

Rugby tryouts work best as skills stations followed by a controlled game. Check your league's age rules on contact first. Many under-12 programs play tag or touch, so the contact stations change with age.

  1. 01

    Passing and catching

Setup. Lines of three or four passing both ways while running across the field.

What to watch. Hands up as a target, catching early, and passing to the space in front of the receiver.

  2. 02

    Ball carrying and evasion

Setup. 1-on-1 in a channel about 10 meters wide, with a tag or a two-hand touch for younger groups.

What to watch. Change of pace and direction, carrying the ball in two hands, and running at space rather than at the defender.

  3. 03

    Tackle technique

Setup. For age groups that allow contact: tackle bags or shields first, then a walking-pace tackle on a partner.

What to watch. Eyes open, head to the side of the ball carrier, shoulder contact, and wrapping with both arms. Stop right away if technique is unsafe.

  4. 04

    Breakdown and rucking

Setup. A carrier goes to ground with the ball, and support players arrive to protect it.

What to watch. Arriving low and on their feet, and clearing through the ruck rather than falling onto it.

  5. 05

    Fitness and speed

Setup. Timed 40-meter sprint and a short repeated-sprint test.

What to watch. Speed is worth knowing, but score how quickly players recover and get back into position.

  6. 06

    Controlled game

Setup. Small-sided touch or full-contact game, depending on age, with frequent restarts.

What to watch. Work rate, communication in defense, and choosing when to pass or carry.

What a 1, 3 and 5 look like

Share this with evaluators before the tryout. When everyone scores against the same descriptions, you don't have to argue about whose 4 is right.

Category135
Ball skillsDrops passes and throws the ball backward from the hip.Passes well to their stronger side and on the run is less accurate.Catches early and passes accurately both ways at full speed.
ContactLeads with the head or turns away from contact.Safe technique at walking pace, and less sure at speed.Safe, confident technique at speed, and wins the ball back or protects it at the breakdown.
DefenseDrifts out of the line and waits for the attack.Holds their spot in the line but is slow off the mark.Moves up with the line, talks, and makes tackles from the right shoulder.
FitnessStays out of the game after the first few minutes.Keeps up but is slow to get back onside.Works back into position every phase, even late in the session.
OverallFollows the ball instead of their role.Knows their role in set pieces, less so in open play.Reads space, communicates, and makes good choices between passing and carrying.

Adjusting the tryout by age

Under 12
Most programs play tag or touch at this age. Replace the tackle and ruck stations with evasion and support-running drills.
12 to 15
Introduce contact stations gradually, and only with a coach qualified to teach tackling. Pair players by size and experience.
16 and over
Add set-piece stations for scrums and lineouts, and let forwards and backs split for part of the session.

From the leagues

Leagues talk.

Volunteer boards, real seasons, zero paper. In their own words.

Menifee Pony Baseball

We have about 900 players in our league, we do assessments and a draft for over 40 of our teams. Bravara was a huge time, energy and paper saver for us, so much better than the old way!

Mike A.
La Costa Youth Baseball

I find it pretty remarkable that we made the decision to use Bravara just a week before our evals, and then had the smoothest/easiest evaluation process we've ever had.

Drew L.
Lake Murray Little League

Our league has used the same old system for years and that all changed with Bravara. This app made our assessment and draft process a breeze. With Bravara there is no need for a pen and paper, which our staff really enjoyed. We will definitely be using the app in the many seasons to come. Thanks Bravara!

Travis D.
Westchester Del-Rey Little League

The application saved us a significant amount of time and contributed to forming balanced teams, which is always a win for our league. I also want to give a huge shoutout to Brian and Mike. The level of customer service they provided was second to none.

Jim E.
AYSO

Bravara has been a godsend for our AYSO Region in the terms of team formation and creating balanced teams.
