Basketball defensive drills

These basketball defensive drills teach stance and footwork first, then guarding the ball, then playing together as a team. Most of them take ten minutes or less. Run a little defense every practice and it becomes part of how your team plays.

Defensive drills for youth basketball

Footwork and stance drills for younger players and for the start of the season. Keep them short, because a low stance is tiring.

Defensive slides

Players get in a stance with feet wider than their shoulders and slide from one side of the lane to the other without crossing their feet or bringing them together. Go for 20 to 30 seconds and count touches of the lane line. Keep hands active and the head level.

Full team4 min

Wave drill

The team spreads out in defensive stance facing the coach. The coach points left, right, forward, or back, and players slide or drop step that way. Add a call for a charge or a closeout to keep them alert.

Pairs4 min

Mirror drill

Two players face each other across the lane. The offensive player shuffles side to side without a ball and the defender tries to stay square in front of them. Go for 15 to 20 seconds and switch.

On-ball defense drills

Drills for guarding the ball handler and the player one pass away. These work from about age 9 up.

Deny the wing

A coach or passer has the ball at the top and an offensive player starts on the wing. The defender keeps a hand and foot in the passing lane and stays between the player and the ball while the wing tries to get open. Play live for a few seconds once the wing catches.

Pairs8 min

1-on-1 from the wing

The offensive player catches on the wing and has three dribbles to score. The defender works to keep the ball out of the middle and contest the shot without fouling. The defender must box out and get the rebound to end the possession.

Team defensive drills

Drills that teach help defense, rotation, and transition defense. Best for teams that already know basic man-to-man positioning.

The shell drill is a 4-on-4 half-court drill that teaches team defense.

Take the charge drill

A defender sets their feet in the lane in a legal guarding position and a ball handler walks or jogs into them. The defender takes the contact in the chest, falls back, and lands on their backside with their hands down. Start at walking speed and use a mat or pad for younger players.

How to run defensive drills at practice

Keep defensive drills short and intense. A good stance burns out legs quickly, and a tired player stands up straight. Thirty seconds of hard slides with a short rest works better than two minutes of sloppy ones.

Teach one thing per drill and say it the same way every time. Players remember short cues such as "ball, you, man" or "high hands on the closeout" better than a long explanation. Stop the drill to correct a habit once, then let them play.

Make defense competitive. Give points for stops, deflections, and charges, and let the defense win the drill. Young players take pride in defense when it is something the coach counts.

Basketball defensive drills FAQ

What are good defensive drills for youth basketball?

Defensive slides, the wave drill, and the mirror drill teach stance and footwork. Once players have those, move to the zig-zag drill for guarding the ball and the shell drill for help defense.

What is the proper defensive stance in basketball?

Feet a little wider than the shoulders, knees bent, weight on the balls of the feet, back mostly straight, and hands out and active. The defender stays between their player and the basket.

How do you teach help defense to kids?

Start with the shell drill and teach positions one pass away and two passes away. Have players point to the ball and their player so they learn to see both. Most kids get it faster by walking through the spots first.

Should youth basketball teams play zone or man-to-man?

Many youth leagues require man-to-man at younger ages, and it teaches the skills players need at every level. Check your league rules before planning your defense.
