1-3-1 zone trap
Some youth leagues don't allow zone defense or half-court trapping below a certain age. Check your league's rules before you put it in.
1-3-1 zone defense step by step
- 1
X1 pressures the ball at the top. On the pass to the wing, X1 and X3 trap it, X5 slides to the high post, X4 heads for the corner, and X2 sinks into the lane.
- 2
Pass to the corner. X4 and X3 trap it, X5 takes the ball-side block, X1 drops to the elbow, and X2 protects the rim.
- 3
The corner is trapped and the nearby passes are covered. The trapped player has to throw over the top or across the floor.

When to use a 1-3-1 zone
A 1-3-1 zone fits when you have long, active players and want to speed the other team up. It is good against teams that don't pass well under pressure or that line up with two guards on top.
Many coaches use it for a few possessions at a time to change the look, especially coming out of a timeout. It needs a quick, tireless player at the bottom of the zone, so it is harder to run if you don't have one.
1-3-1 zone responsibilities by position
X1 (top)
Pressures the ball and turns it toward a sideline. On a wing pass, X1 runs with the ball and traps from the top side. On a corner pass, X1 drops to the ball-side elbow.
X2 and X3 (wings)
Guard the wings. The ball-side wing traps with X1 on a wing pass and follows the ball down to trap the corner. The weak-side wing sinks into the lane to cover the rim and read the skip pass.
X5 (middle)
Plays in the middle of the zone at the free throw line. Fronts or denies the high post, then drops to the ball-side block when the ball goes to the corner.
X4 (baseline or rover)
Covers the whole baseline from corner to corner. Runs out to trap every corner pass and gets back to the other side on reversals. This player needs quick feet and a lot of energy.
How to beat a 1-3-1 zone
Use a two-guard front so the top defender can't guard both guards. Put a player on the baseline who moves from short corner to short corner, because X4 has to cover the whole baseline alone.
Pass out of traps before they close. Ball handlers should catch, look, and move the ball quickly, and use pass fakes to move the trappers. Dribbling into a corner makes the trap easier.
The corners and the short corners are usually open, and quick ball reversal or a skip pass to the weak side can beat the rotation.

1-3-1 zone drill: trap and rotate
- Set up two guards, two wings, and one player in a corner against a 1-3-1.
- Offense passes to a wing and holds it for three seconds. X1 and the ball-side wing trap while the other three rotate. Coach checks every spot.
- Offense passes to the corner. X4 and the ball-side wing trap, X5 takes the block, X1 drops, and the weak-side wing covers the rim.
- Let the trapped player try to pass out. Defenders in the gaps try to deflect or steal it.
- Play it live for five possessions and count deflections and turnovers.
Coaching point In a good trap the two defenders' feet are close together so the ball handler can't split it, and their hands are high to take away passing angles. Swiping at the ball is how trappers pick up fouls.
Common 1-3-1 zone defense mistakes
- X1 pressuring so hard that the ball handler beats them to the middle of the floor.
- Trapping with a gap between the two defenders, which lets the ball handler split the trap.
- Reaching and fouling in the trap.
- X4 staying under the basket, which leaves the corners open.
- The weak-side wing staying out on the perimeter while the ball is trapped, leaving the rim open.
- Players not recovering after the ball gets out of a trap. The zone has to reset quickly.
1-3-1 zone defense FAQ
What is a 1-3-1 zone defense?
It is a zone with one defender at the top, three across the free throw line, and one along the baseline. It is built to trap the ball on the wings and in the corners.
How does the 1-3-1 trap work?
When the ball goes to a wing, the top defender and the ball-side wing trap it. When it goes to the corner, the baseline defender and the ball-side wing trap it. The other three players guard the nearest passing lanes and the rim.
What is the weakness of a 1-3-1 zone?
The corners, the short corners, and the baseline. One defender has to cover the whole baseline, so a quick pass to the corner or a skip pass to the weak side can find an open shot.
How do you beat a 1-3-1 zone?
Line up with two guards on top, keep a player on the baseline, and pass the ball quickly before traps close. Short corners and skip passes are good places to attack.
