3-2 zone rotations
Some youth leagues don't allow zone defense below a certain age. Check your league's rules before you put it in.
3-2 zone defense step by step
- 1
Base 3-2 with the ball at the top. On the pass to the wing, X2 takes the ball, X1 drops to the ball-side elbow, X3 sinks toward the middle, and X4 and X5 slide over.
- 2
Pass to the corner. X4 closes out, X5 covers the ball-side block, and X3 drops all the way to the weak-side block to protect the rim.
- 3
Pass back to the wing. X3 comes back up and the zone returns to its wing shape.
- 4
Pass back to the top. The zone slides back to its base shape.
- 5
The weak-side wing has the longest trip in a 3-2. When the ball goes to the other corner, X2 makes the same drop.

When to use a 3-2 zone
A 3-2 zone fits when the other team shoots well from the top and the wings. Three defenders up high can pressure the ball and get hands into passing lanes.
It also works when you have quick, long guards and wings but only one or two players who can defend near the basket. The trade-off is the baseline. Only two defenders start low, so the corners, short corners, and weak-side rebounding need extra attention.
3-2 zone responsibilities by position
X1 (point)
Pressures the ball at the top and keeps it from being swung easily. When the ball goes to a wing, X1 drops to the ball-side elbow to take away the high post.
X2 and X3 (wings)
Guard the wings on their side. The ball-side wing takes the ball. The weak-side wing sinks toward the lane, and when the ball goes to the corner it drops to the weak-side block to help rebound and protect the rim. This is the hardest job in the zone.
X4 and X5 (back line)
Guard the blocks and the corners. On a pass to the corner, the ball-side back defender closes out and the other one slides across to the ball-side block. They also cover the short corner and box out.
How to beat a 3-2 zone
Offenses often use a two-guard front against a 3-2. Two guards stand in the gaps on either side of X1, which forces X1 or a wing to commit to the ball. Add a player on the baseline who runs from short corner to short corner, because the two back defenders have a lot of ground to cover.
Quick passes to the corner and then into the short corner or low post put pressure on the back line. Skip passes to the weak-side corner are hard for the weak-side wing to reach in time.
3-2 zone drill: shell slides
- Put five offensive players at the top, both wings, and both corners. Five defenders set up in the 3-2.
- Offense passes around the perimeter slowly. Defenders slide on the pass and freeze on the catch.
- Check the weak-side wing on every corner pass. They should be on or near the weak-side block.
- Speed up the passing and add skip passes from corner to corner and wing to wing.
- Play it live for a few possessions. A stop only counts once the defense secures the rebound.
Coaching point Watch the weak-side wing. The 3-2 only holds up near the basket when that player gets all the way down on corner passes.
Common 3-2 zone defense mistakes
- X1 chasing the ball out too far, which opens the high post behind them.
- The weak-side wing staying high when the ball goes to the corner, leaving one defender to cover the whole lane.
- Back-line defenders both closing out to the same corner.
- Slow closeouts to the corner after a skip pass.
- Wings and guards leaving the defensive glass to the two back-line players.
3-2 zone vs. 2-3 zone
A 3-2 zone has three defenders up high, so it guards the top and wings better and can pressure guards. A 2-3 zone has three defenders low, so it protects the paint and rebounds better. If the other team is shooting over you from the wings, the 3-2 helps. If they are scoring at the rim or on the offensive boards, the 2-3 is usually the better fit.
3-2 zone defense FAQ
What is a 3-2 zone defense in basketball?
It is a zone with three defenders across the top of the key and wings and two defenders near the basket. Each player guards an area, and the zone shifts together as the ball moves.
What is the difference between a 3-2 and a 2-3 zone?
The 3-2 puts three players on the perimeter and two low, which helps against outside shooting. The 2-3 puts two players up and three low, which helps protect the basket and rebound.
What are the weaknesses of a 3-2 zone?
The corners, the short corners, the low post, and rebounding. Only two defenders start near the basket, so the weak-side wing has to drop down to help.
How do you rotate in a 3-2 zone?
On a wing pass, the ball-side wing takes the ball and the point drops to the elbow. On a corner pass, the ball-side back defender closes out, the other back defender covers the ball-side block, and the weak-side wing drops to the weak-side block.
