2-3 zone defense

The 2-3 zone defense puts two guards up top and three players across the lane. It packs the paint, protects the rim, and keeps your bigs close to the basket. This page shows the 2-3 zone rotations as the ball moves around the perimeter, what each position is responsible for, a drill to teach the slides, and how offenses try to beat it.

Some youth leagues don't allow zone defense below a certain age. Check your league's rules before you put it in.

2-3 zone defense step by step

  1. 1

Base 2-3 with the ball at the top. On the pass to the wing, X2 takes the ball, X1 drops toward the high post, and the back line slides toward the ball.

  2. 2

Pass to the corner. X3 closes out, X5 fronts the ball-side block, X2 sinks into the gap, and X1 drops to the high post.

  3. 3

Pass back to the wing. Everyone returns to the same wing spots they had before.

  4. 4

Pass back to the top. The zone slides back to its base shape.

  5. 5

Each ball position has a matching spot for every defender. When the ball comes back to the same place, the zone should look the same.

When to use a 2-3 zone

A 2-3 zone fits when the other team likes to drive or post up and doesn't shoot well from outside. It keeps three players near the basket at all times, so your tallest kids can stay in the paint and rebound.

It also helps when you are in foul trouble, when your team is a step slower than the opponent, or when you want to change the look for a few possessions. The trade-off is the perimeter. A team with two good shooters can hurt a 2-3, especially from the corners and the top of the key.

2-3 zone responsibilities by position

X1 and X2 (guards)

Guard the top and the wings. The guard on the ball side takes the ball on the wing. The other guard drops to the high post area so a pass to the free throw line isn't wide open. Both need active hands in the passing lanes.

X3 and X4 (forwards)

Guard the block and the corner on their side. When the ball goes to the corner, the ball-side forward closes out to it. The weak-side forward slides toward the middle of the lane and is the first to help on a skip pass or a baseline drive.

X5 (center)

Owns the paint. Fronts or plays beside any post player on the ball side, slides block to block with the ball, and is the main rebounder. X5 talks the most because they can see the whole floor.

How to beat a 2-3 zone

Put a player at the free throw line. The high post sits right in the middle of the zone where no one is assigned, and a catch there makes the back line choose between the shooter and the rim.

Use a one-guard front. A 2-3 has two defenders up top, so one ball handler at the top of the key splits them and forces one to commit. Then move the ball quickly with passes and skip passes. The zone slides slower than the ball can travel.

Attack the short corners and corners. The forwards have to cover a big area from the block to the corner, and a player in the short corner gets open when the forward steps out.

2-3 zone drill: shell slides

  1. Put five offensive players at the top, both wings, and both corners. Five defenders set up in the 2-3.
  2. Offense passes slowly around the perimeter, holding each catch for two seconds. Defenders slide to their spots on the pass and freeze when the ball is caught.
  3. Stop and check spacing on every catch. Fix one defender at a time until the whole group knows each spot.
  4. Speed it up to game-speed passing, then add skip passes from wing to wing.
  5. Finish with a live possession. Offense can shoot, and the defense must box out and secure the rebound.

Coaching point Everyone moves while the ball is in the air. If defenders wait for the catch to start sliding, they will always be a step late.

Common 2-3 zone defense mistakes

  • Guards standing flat at the top of the key, which leaves the high post open for an easy catch.
  • The forward waiting too long to close out to the corner, giving up an open three.
  • The weak-side forward staying glued to their own block when the ball is on the other side, which leaves the middle of the lane open.
  • Nobody boxing out. Zones give up long rebounds and offensive boards if players don't find a body.
  • Only one or two players talking. Each defender should call out the ball and any cutter coming through their area.

2-3 zone vs. 3-2 zone

A 2-3 zone keeps three players near the basket, so it protects the paint and rebounds better. A 3-2 zone puts three players up high, so it pressures the perimeter and the wings but gives up more room near the baseline and short corners. Many coaches play a 2-3 against teams that drive and a 3-2 against teams that shoot well from the top and wings.

2-3 zone defense FAQ

What is a 2-3 zone defense in basketball?

It is a zone where two defenders guard the top and wings and three defenders guard the lane, blocks, and corners. Each player guards an area of the floor, and the whole zone shifts as the ball moves.

What is the weakness of a 2-3 zone?

The high post (free throw line), the short corners, and the corners. It can also struggle against teams with good outside shooters because only two defenders start on the perimeter.

How do the rotations work in a 2-3 zone?

On a pass to the wing, the ball-side guard takes the ball and the other guard drops to the high post. On a pass to the corner, the ball-side forward closes out, the center slides to the ball-side block, and the weak-side forward covers the middle of the lane.

Is a 2-3 zone good for youth basketball?

It can be, especially against teams that drive a lot. Many youth coaches also teach man-to-man first so players learn to guard the ball, and some leagues don't allow zones at younger ages.
