2-3 zone offense

A 2-3 zone offense is built to find the open spots in a 2-3 zone. The two weak areas are the high post, right behind the two guards, and the short corner, along the baseline behind the forward. This page shows a simple way to use both, what each player does, how to read the zone, and a drill to practice it.

How to beat a 2-3 zone: high post and short corner

2-3 zone offense step by step

  1. 1

O1 starts at the top, in the gap between the two zone guards. O1 passes to O2 on the wing while O4 slides to the short corner and O5 flashes to the high post.

  2. 2

X2 is out on the wing and X1 is watching the top, so O5 is open at the free throw line. O2 passes to O5.

  3. 3

O5 catches and faces the rim. X5 steps up and X3 slides in to cover the rim, so O5 passes to O4 in the short corner.

  4. 4

X3 runs back out at O4. O5 dives to the rim behind X5.

  5. 5

O4 passes to O5 for a layup. If X4 comes over to help, O3 on the left wing is open.

When to use this 2-3 zone offense

Use it any time the other team sits back in a 2-3 zone. Youth teams see a lot of 2-3 zones because they protect the paint and keep tall players near the basket. Running your man-to-man offense against it usually leads to players cutting into the lane and getting stuck.

The alignment starts with one guard at the top, two wings, and two players low. That puts the ball handler in the gap between the two zone guards and makes the zone decide who guards the high post and the short corner.

2-3 zone offense roles by position

O1 (point guard)

Stay in the gap between X1 and X2 at the top. Make both of them think about guarding you before you pass to a wing.

O2 and O3 (wings)

Stand just outside the 3-point line in the gap between the zone guard and the forward. Catch ready to shoot. When the ball goes into the high post, get your hands ready for a kick-out.

O5 (high post)

Flash to the free throw line when the ball goes to a wing. Catch, turn, and face the rim right away. Look at the rim, then the short corner, then the weak-side wing.

O4 (short corner)

Sit on the baseline about halfway between the block and the corner. When you catch, you can shoot a short jumper, pass to O5 diving, or hit the weak side on a baseline cut.

How to beat a 2-3 zone

Put players in the gaps. A zone defender can guard one player in their area, but a player standing between two defenders makes both of them hesitate.

Move the ball faster than the zone can shift. Two quick passes, like wing to top to the other wing, usually beat a zone that's sliding over. Skip passes over the top work too, once players are strong enough to throw them.

Get the ball inside. A catch at the high post or short corner pulls defenders toward the ball and opens shots on the outside. Crash the offensive glass, because zones don't box out a specific player.

2-3 zone offense drill: 5-on-5 inside touch

  1. Set up five defenders in a 2-3 zone and five on offense in the alignment on this page.
  2. Walk through the high post flash and the short corner pass at half speed so players learn where the gaps are.
  3. Play live with one rule: the ball has to touch the high post or short corner before anyone shoots.
  4. Keep score. Give the offense an extra point for a basket that comes from a pass out of the high post or short corner.

Coaching point Watch the high post catch. If O5 catches facing away from the basket, the zone has time to recover. The turn to face the rim is what makes X5 step up.

Common 2-3 zone offense mistakes

  • Passing the ball around the outside with nobody flashing inside, so the zone never has to move.
  • Standing right next to a defender, where one player can guard you without moving.
  • The high post catching and holding the ball with their back to the rim.
  • Dribbling into the middle of the zone, where three defenders can reach the ball.
  • Nobody crashing the glass after a shot.

2-3 zone offense vs. 1-3-1 zone offense

The 2-3 zone is weakest at the high post and short corner, so this offense starts with one guard up top. The 1-3-1 is weakest in the corners and along the baseline, where one defender has to cover both sides, so the offense against it usually starts with two guards up top and players in both corners.

2-3 zone offense FAQ

How do you beat a 2-3 zone in youth basketball?

Put a player at the high post and a player in the short corner, keep your guards and wings in the gaps, and move the ball quickly. A catch in the middle of the zone forces a defender to leave someone open.

Where are the weak spots in a 2-3 zone?

The high post, behind the two guards, and the short corners along the baseline. The wings and the top can also be open when the zone is slow to shift.

What is the best offense against a 2-3 zone?

Many coaches use a 1-3-1 alignment against a 2-3 zone. It puts a guard at the top, two wings, a high post, and a low post or short corner player, so every player is in a gap.

Should you shoot threes against a 2-3 zone?

Open threes are a good shot if your players can make them. The best looks usually come after a pass into the high post or short corner pulls the zone in.
