Triangle and 2 defense

The triangle and 2 defense is a combination defense. Two defenders play man-to-man on the other team's two best scorers, and the other three play a small triangle zone around the lane. It is built for games where two players are doing most of the scoring. This page shows the triangle and 2 in an animated diagram, what each position does, a drill to teach it, and how offenses try to beat it.

Some youth leagues don't allow zone or combination defenses below a certain age. Check your league's rules before you use it.

Triangle and 2 defense step by step

  1. 1

X1 guards O1 and X2 denies O2, the two best scorers. On the pass to O3, X3 comes out from the high post and the back two slide toward the ball.

  2. 2

O2 cuts across the lane looking for the ball. X2 stays attached and keeps denying, and the triangle lets X2 handle it.

  3. 3

Pass to the corner. X4 closes out, X5 slides to the ball-side block, and X3 sinks to take away the pass back inside.

  4. 4

Both scorers are still denied and the triangle has the ball side covered. The shot left open is O5 in the far corner, which is the shot you are willing to give up.

When to use a triangle and 2 defense

Use it when two players on the other team score most of their points and the other three are not much of a threat. The goal is to make the other three beat you.

It works best for a few possessions or a half, when the other team has not seen it. Teams that practice against it can find the holes, so most coaches use it as a change-up.

If only one player is doing the damage, a box-and-1 is usually a better fit. If the other three can shoot, the triangle has too much ground to cover and you are better off in man-to-man.

Triangle and 2 responsibilities by position

X1 and X2 (chasers)

Each chaser guards one scorer everywhere they go. Deny the catch, stay attached through cuts and screens, and fight over the top of screens. If your player catches it, make them work hard for every shot.

X3 (top of the triangle)

Starts near the free throw line. Guards the high post and closes out to the wing on the ball side. When the ball goes to the corner, sinks back toward the block to take away the pass inside.

X4 and X5 (base of the triangle)

Start on the blocks. The ball-side defender closes out to the corner. The other one slides to the ball-side block and guards the post. Both have to rebound, since the chasers are often far from the basket.

How to beat a triangle and 2

Use the two scorers as screeners. When a chaser has to fight through a screen, a teammate often comes open. Screening for each other also puts the two chasers close together, which can lead to a switch you want.

Attack the three players in the triangle. Put one non-scorer at the top and two on the wings. Three defenders cannot guard the high post, both wings, and both corners at once.

Give the scorers the ball late in a possession through a handoff or a cut to the basket, when the chasers are tired from denying.

Triangle and 2 drill: chase and shift

  1. Set up five on offense. Mark two players as the scorers with a colored pinnie. Three defenders set up the triangle and two chasers pick up the scorers.
  2. Walk it first. Offense passes around the perimeter with the scorers standing still. The triangle shifts on each pass and the chasers deny.
  3. Let the scorers cut and use screens. The chasers stay with them, and the triangle does not switch onto a scorer.
  4. Play live possessions. The offense gets a point for any shot by a scorer, and the defense gets a point for any stop.

Coaching point The chasers carry the defense. If they relax for a second, the scorer catches it and the whole plan falls apart. Rotate fresh players into the chaser spots so they can keep working.

Common triangle and 2 defense mistakes

  • A triangle defender leaving their area to help on a scorer, which leaves an easy basket for someone else.
  • Chasers going under screens and giving the scorer an open shot.
  • The triangle standing still when the ball moves. It has to shift on every pass like any other zone.
  • Nobody boxing out. The chasers are often far from the basket, so the triangle has to rebound.
  • Using it against a team where three or more players can score.

Triangle and 2 vs. box-and-1

A box-and-1 puts one chaser on a single scorer and four players in a box zone. A triangle and 2 uses two chasers and a three-player triangle. The box-and-1 covers more of the floor with its zone, and the triangle and 2 takes away more of the offense's scoring. Pick the one that matches how many players are doing the damage.

Triangle and 2 defense FAQ

What is a triangle and 2 defense?

It is a combination defense where two defenders guard the other team's two best players man-to-man and the other three play a triangle zone around the lane.

How do you beat a triangle and 2 defense?

Use the two scorers to set screens for each other, attack the triangle with the other three players spread out, and get the scorers the ball through handoffs and cuts.

Is a triangle and 2 a junk defense?

Yes. Combination defenses like the triangle and 2 and the box-and-1 are often called junk defenses because they mix man-to-man and zone.

Where does the triangle line up in a triangle and 2?

Most coaches put one defender at the free throw line and two on the blocks. Some flip it so one defender is under the basket and two are at the elbows.
