Man to man defense

In man to man defense, each player guards one opponent, but four of the five are also helping. Where you stand depends on where the ball is. This page shows the ball-side and help-side positions as the ball swings from wing to wing, what each position is responsible for, a shell drill to teach it, and the mistakes youth teams make most.

Man to man defense step by step

  1. 1

X2 guards the ball, X1 and X4 are up the line, and X3 and X5 help near the lane. On the pass to the top, all five defenders move while the ball is in the air.

  2. 2

X1 guards the ball and both corner defenders sink toward the lane. On the pass to the left wing, X3 takes the ball, X5 moves up the line, and X2 and X4 become the help side.

  3. 3

O3 drives baseline. X4, the low help defender, steps over to meet the drive, and X2 sinks toward the rim to cover X4's player.

  4. 4

X4 stops the drive outside the lane while X3 stays on O3's hip. X2 is close enough to guard a pass to O4 in the corner.

When to use man to man defense

Man to man is the base defense for most teams, and many youth leagues require it at younger ages. It teaches players to guard the ball, see the floor, and help each other, and those skills carry over to every other defense.

It works best when your players can stay in front of their opponents, or at least slow them down while help arrives. Against a team with one great driver, a pack-line style man to man keeps help defenders close to the paint so the driver sees a crowd.

Ball-side and help-side responsibilities

On the ball

Pressure the ball handler and keep them out of the middle. Stay between your player and the basket, with a hand up to bother passes and shots.

One pass away (on the line, up the line)

Get on the passing line between your player and the ball, then move a step or two up that line toward the ball. You should be able to deflect a lazy pass and still help on a drive. How hard you deny depends on your team's rules.

Two passes away (help side)

Sink to the help side near the middle of the lane, often with a foot in the paint. Point one hand at your player and one at the ball so you can see both. You are the first to help on drives and cuts.

Low help (the low man)

The help-side defender closest to the baseline protects the rim. When the ball is driven baseline, this player steps over to stop it outside the lane, and a teammate sinks to cover their player.

How to teach help side defense

Start with the rule that every defender moves on every pass. When the ball moves, each defender's job changes, and they should be in the new spot by the time the ball is caught. Coaches call this jumping to the ball.

Pack line teams draw an imaginary line about 16 feet from the basket. Everyone except the player guarding the ball stays inside that line, which keeps help close to the paint. It gives up some outside catches in exchange for fewer drives to the rim.

Teach closeouts early. A help defender who has sunk to the lane has to run back out when the ball is passed to their player. They sprint the first few steps, then chop their feet and arrive with a hand up.

Help side defense drill: 4-on-4 shell

  1. Put four offensive players at the two wings and two slots, or the two wings and two corners. Four defenders guard them.
  2. Offense passes slowly and holds each catch for two seconds. Defenders jump to their new spots on every pass. Coach checks each one.
  3. Add a skip pass. Help-side defenders close out under control.
  4. Let the ball handler drive. The nearest help defender stops the drive and everyone else rotates one spot.
  5. Finish live. The defense needs three stops in a row to rotate to offense.

Coaching point Say it out loud. The on-ball defender calls "ball," one-pass-away defenders call "deny," and help-side defenders call "help." If a player isn't talking, they are usually in the wrong spot.

If defenders fly past the shooter when they rotate, isolate that footwork with the closeout drill before returning to the shell drill.

Common man to man defense basketball mistakes

  • Help-side defenders staying glued to their player, leaving no one to stop a drive.
  • Moving after the catch. Defenders should move while the ball is in the air.
  • Losing sight of your player on the help side. Point to both your player and the ball.
  • Out-of-control closeouts that let the shooter drive right past.
  • Only the low man helping on a drive while nobody rotates behind them.

Man to man vs. 2-3 zone

Man to man gives each player one opponent to guard and uses help-side positions to protect the paint. A 2-3 zone has each player guard an area and keeps three defenders near the basket. Many coaches teach man to man first because the same footwork and help rules make zones easier to learn later.

Man to man defense basketball FAQ

What is help side defense in basketball?

Help side defense is how defenders who are away from the ball position themselves to stop drives and cuts. They sink toward the lane where they can see both their player and the ball.

What does ball-side and help-side mean in basketball?

Picture a line down the middle of the court from basket to basket. The ball side is the half of the floor where the ball is. The help side, also called the weak side, is the other half.

What does on the line, up the line mean in man to man defense?

It is a cue for a defender whose player is one pass away. Get on the passing line between your player and the ball, then slide up that line a step toward the ball. From there you can deflect a pass and still help on a drive. Defenders two passes away sink further, to the middle of the floor.

What is pack line defense?

It is a style of man to man where every defender not guarding the ball stays inside an imaginary line about 16 feet from the basket. It keeps help close to the paint and makes it hard to drive.
