Sweep diagram
- 1
A plain handoff to Y running wide. Z and X run deep to take their defenders with them, which leaves the edge open.
When to call Sweep
Call it on first or second down when you are outside the no-run zones. Most leagues do not allow runs in the 5 yards before midfield or the goal line.
It also sets up other plays. Once the defense starts running to the right at the handoff, you have the reverse and the play-action post.
Sweep: each player's job
QB
Take the snap, turn to the right and hand the ball to Y. In most leagues the QB cannot run or block, so finish with a fake throw.
C
Snap and drag to the left at 3 to 4 yards, away from the run. A defender who follows you is out of the play.
X
From the left, run a post toward the middle of the field. You take your defender and the nearest safety deep.
Y
Line up beside the QB on the right. Take the handoff, run toward the right sideline for 7 or 8 yards, then turn upfield.
Z
Run a go route up the right sideline. Your defender has to turn and run with you, and that opens the edge for Y.
What the quarterback looks at
Y does the reading on this play. Take the handoff and look at the first defender outside. If that defender is running deep with Z, the sideline is open and Y should get there fast.
If a defender stays home on the edge, Y plants and cuts up inside. Never run backward to get around anyone.
How to teach Sweep at practice
- 1
Practice the handoff standing still. The QB places the ball and Y closes both arms over it.
- 2
Add Z and X and have them run hard.
- 3
Put one defender on the edge and let Y practice going outside or cutting up.
Common mistakes
- Y runs straight for the sideline and gets forced out of bounds for no gain. Turn upfield as soon as there is a lane.
- A receiver sets a block. In most youth flag leagues that is a penalty, so teach routes that take defenders away.
- You call it in a no-run zone. Have an assistant watch the field markers.
Sweep FAQ
What is a good running play for 5v5 flag football?
The sweep is the best one to start with. It is a single handoff, and the receivers clear space by running deep routes.
Can you block on a sweep in flag football?
Most youth flag leagues do not allow blocking at all. Receivers help the runner by running routes that pull defenders away from the ball. Check your league's rules, because a few leagues allow some form of screening.
Where are the no-run zones in flag football?
In NFL FLAG and many other leagues they cover the 5 yards before midfield and the 5 yards before the goal line. Inside them the offense has to pass.
