1-2-2 zone defense rotations
Some youth leagues don't allow zone defense below a certain age. Check your league's rules before you put it in.
1-2-2 zone defense step by step
- 1
Base 1-2-2 with the ball at the top. On the pass to the wing, X2 closes out, X1 drops toward the ball-side elbow, and the other three slide toward the ball.
- 2
Pass to the corner. X4 closes out, X5 slides to the ball-side block, X2 sinks to take away the pass back inside, and X3 drops to the weak-side block.
- 3
Pass back to the wing. Everyone returns to the same wing spots they had before.
- 4
Pass back to the top. The zone slides back to its base 1-2-2 shape.
- 5
Each ball position has a matching spot for every defender. When the ball comes back to the same place, the zone should look the same.

When to use a 1-2-2 zone defense
A 1-2-2 zone fits when the other team has good shooters on the wings and at the top, or when they run a two-guard front. The point defender can pressure the ball and the two wings are already out on the perimeter, so outside shots are harder to get.
It is also a good zone if your team has quick guards and not much size. Two back defenders still guard the blocks, and the extended wings can get into passing lanes.
The trade-off is the middle and the baseline. The high post sits between the point and the two wings, and the short corners are a long slide for the back two. Teams that can pass into the middle or attack the baseline can hurt a 1-2-2.
1-2-2 zone responsibilities by position
X1 (point)
Guards the ball at the top and tries to turn it to one side. On a pass to the wing, drops toward the ball-side elbow to take away the high post. X1 should be quick and willing to talk.
X2 and X3 (wings)
Guard the wings on their side. The ball-side wing closes out on a pass to the wing. When the ball goes to the corner, sink toward the block to take away the pass inside. The weak-side wing drops into the lane to help and rebound.
X4 and X5 (back two)
Guard the blocks and the corners. The ball-side back defender closes out to the corner. The other back defender slides across the lane to cover the ball-side block. Both are the main rebounders.
How to beat a 1-2-2 zone
Use a two-guard front. With two ball handlers at the slots, the point defender can only guard one, and the wing defender has to come up to guard the other. That stretches the zone and opens the high post.
Flash a player to the free throw line. A catch in the middle forces the back two to choose between the ball and the rim.
Put players in the short corners and move the ball to the corner. The back defenders have to cover from the block to the corner, and the short corner gets open when one of them steps out.

1-2-2 zone drill: shell slides
- Put five offensive players at the top, both wings, and both corners. Five defenders set up in the 1-2-2.
- Offense passes slowly around the perimeter, holding each catch for two seconds. Defenders slide to their spots on the pass and freeze when the ball is caught.
- Check spacing on every catch, especially X1 dropping to the elbow and the back two covering the blocks.
- Add a player who flashes to the high post. The nearest defenders must deny the pass or collapse on the catch.
- Finish with live possessions. The defense must box out and get the rebound to end each one.
Coaching point Everyone moves while the ball is in the air. A 1-2-2 has to slide farther than a 2-3, so a late start leaves the corner or the high post open.
Common 1-2-2 zone defense mistakes
- X1 staying at the top when the ball goes to the wing, which leaves the high post open.
- The ball-side back defender closing out to the corner too slowly and giving up an open three.
- The weak-side back defender staying on their own block so nobody guards the ball-side post.
- Wings chasing the ball into the corner and leaving the wing and the lane open.
- Nobody boxing out after a shot, since zones don't match up with a player to hit.
1-2-2 zone vs. 2-3 zone
A 1-2-2 zone starts with three defenders on the perimeter, so it guards shooters on the top and wings better. A 2-3 zone starts with three players near the basket, so it protects the paint and rebounds better. Many coaches play a 1-2-2 against teams that shoot well from outside and a 2-3 against teams that drive and post up.
1-2-2 zone defense FAQ
What is a 1-2-2 zone defense?
It is a zone with one defender at the top, two on the wings, and two near the blocks. Each player guards an area, and the zone shifts together as the ball moves.
Is a 1-2-2 zone the same as a 3-2 zone?
They are close. Both put three defenders out front and two back. In a 1-2-2 the top defender is usually higher and the wings sit a little lower, and many coaches use the two names for the same thing.
What is the weakness of a 1-2-2 zone?
The high post, the short corners, and the baseline. A team that gets the ball to the free throw line or into the short corner can make the back two defenders choose between two players.
How do you beat a 1-2-2 zone defense?
Use a two-guard front to split the point defender, flash a player to the high post, and move the ball to the corners with players in the short corners.
