Time
10 minutes
Dose
3 sets of 10 throws, 3 days a week (2 sets for players under 10)
Equipment
  • Glove
  • 5–10 balls
  • A target: a partner, a net, or a bucket against a fence

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set a target 15–20 steps (30–40 feet) away: a net, a bucket against a fence, or a partner.

  2. 2

Start in your fielding position, ball in your glove out front, or have a partner roll you grounders.

  3. 3

Step your right foot to where your left was (lefties: the opposite). Stay low, ball to your belly button.

  4. 4

Split your hands, step your left foot (lefties: right) at the target and throw chest high. Follow your throw.

  5. 5

Start with 5 slow reps without letting go. Then do 3 sets of 10 and count every throw that hits your target.

Coaching cues

  • Right, left, throw.
  • Short steps.
  • Follow your throw.

What good looks like

Two quick, short steps toward the target, the glove to your belly button, and a firm chest-high throw.

Safety

Warm up before the first throw. Stop at 20 throws for players under 10 and 30 for older players. Throw at a net or a partner; use a tennis ball if you throw at a wall.

Why this drill

Most wild throws start with feet that stop after the catch. A clean right-left lines the body up with the target, so the throw is quicker and the arm does less of the work.
