Man defense with a rusher diagram
- 1
Each defender takes one receiver, one rushes the quarterback from seven yards, and the safety stays deeper than everyone.
When to call Man defense with a rusher
Use it when your defenders can run with the other team's receivers and you want pressure on the QB.
It is weak against crossing routes, bunch sets and the center. With one player rushing and one deep, you have three defenders for four eligible receivers, and in the diagram nobody is assigned to C.
Man defense with a rusher: each defender's job
R (rusher)
Start 7 yards off the line, which is the rule in most leagues. Run at the QB's throwing arm at the snap.
CB on X
Line up 4 to 5 yards off X, a step to the inside. In the diagram X runs a go, so turn and run.
CB on Y
Cover the slot. Y runs an out in the diagram, so stay on the inside hip and drive on the break toward the sideline.
CB on Z
Cover Z on the right. Z runs a slant here, which is hard to cover from outside. Line up a step inside to take it away.
S (safety)
Stand 12 yards deep in the middle and stay deeper than every receiver. When C goes out with nobody covering, call it out and come up as soon as the ball is thrown there.
What the defense watches
Man defenders watch their receiver's belt. A defender who peeks at the QB loses the receiver.
The rusher watches the QB and nothing else. Against a bunch or a stack, have the defenders line up at different depths and call "switch" so each takes the receiver who comes to their side. If C keeps catching it, stop rushing for a few plays and put the fifth defender on C.
How to teach Man defense with a rusher at practice
- 1
Start with one on one mirror drills. The receiver jogs side to side and the defender stays in front without crossing feet.
- 2
Add the rusher with a cone at 7 yards. Time how long it takes to reach the QB.
- 3
Add the safety and run it against your offense.
Common mistakes
- Defenders look back at the QB and lose the receiver. Eyes stay on the belt until the hands go up.
- Two defenders follow the same receiver on a cross. Either call "switch" out loud or everyone stays with their own.
- The rusher runs past the QB. Slow down for the last two steps and stay in front of the throwing arm.
Man defense with a rusher FAQ
Is man or zone better for 5v5 flag football defense?
Zone is easier to teach and safer for young teams. Man with a rusher puts more pressure on the QB and works when your athletes match up.
Who covers the center in man defense?
With a rusher and a safety, nobody is left for the center. The safety has to react to that throw, or you give up the rush for a play and cover C with the fifth defender.
How do I stop mesh and bunch plays in man?
Teach a switch call. When two receivers cross, the defenders trade and each takes the one coming toward them.
