The video shows ladder footwork patterns. After each run, do 10 toe taps on your ball the way step 3 says.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
7–18
Time
12 minutes
Dose
12 runs through the ladder (4 of each pattern), each followed by 10 toe taps, 2–4 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • Agility ladder, or chalk to draw 10 boxes about a foot and a half (18 inches) wide
  • Flat grass, turf or a dry driveway

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Lay the ladder flat. Set the ball 3 steps (about 6 feet) past the end.

  2. 2

Run through fast with one foot in each box.

  3. 3

At the ball, do 10 fast toe taps on top of it. Walk back to the start.

  4. 4

Do 4 runs one foot per box, 4 two feet per box, and 4 side-stepping two feet per box.

  5. 5

Count a run as clean if you hit every box without touching the ladder. Log clean runs out of 12.

Coaching cues

  • Quick, light feet.
  • Pump your arms.
  • Soft toes on the ball.

What good looks like

Your feet land softly in every box, you speed up as you go, and your toe taps stay quick and light.

Safety

Lay the ladder on flat ground so it can't slide, and skip wet pavement. Jog and skip for a few minutes first. Set up away from the street.

Why this drill

Ladder patterns train quick, light steps and balance. Finishing each run with the ball links those fast feet to your touch, which is where they matter in a game.
