Solo, no partner needed
Ages

Time
10 minutes
Dose
15 swings with each hand, 2 days a week
Equipment
  • Batting tee
  • A light, short bat (a one-hand trainer, plastic bat or small youth bat)
  • Wiffle balls or regular balls
  • Hitting net or an open field

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set the tee belt high, even with your front hip. Choke up on a light, short bat.

  2. 2

Front hand only, other hand on your chest: load, stride, lead with your elbow and let the arm straighten at contact.

  3. 3

Hit 15 easy line drives. Count every solid contact.

  4. 4

Back hand only, bat resting on your shoulder: keep your hand between you and the ball, finish long, and hit 15 more.

  5. 5

Log your solid contacts out of 30, then take 5 normal two-hand swings.

Coaching cues

  • Light bat, easy swing.
  • Short to it, long through.
  • Hand between you and ball.

What good looks like

The barrel stays above the hands, the ball comes off on a line, and the swing stays smooth.

Safety

Use a light, short bat only; a full-size game bat is too heavy for one hand and strains the wrist and elbow. Keep the effort easy, keep the reps low, and stop if the wrist or elbow gets sore.

Why this drill

Each hand has a job. The bottom hand steers the barrel to the ball and the top hand adds speed. Swinging one hand at a time shows which one is causing a long or dipping swing.
