Ages

Time
8 minutes
Dose
2 sets of 10 swings, 2–3 days a week
Equipment
  • 2 batting tees (or a tee and stacked buckets)
  • Bat
  • Hitting net
  • Baseballs or wiffle balls

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set two tees a foot apart (a school ruler), same height, in a line toward the pitcher. Back tee mid-plate.

  2. 2

Put a ball on each. Load and stride like normal.

  3. 3

Hit the back ball straight into the front ball. Count every one you knock off, out of 20.

  4. 4

Keep your arms long and finish with the barrel pointing at the pitcher.

  5. 5

After 3 in a row, move both tees inside, then outside.

Coaching cues

  • Center the back ball.
  • Long arms through both tees.
  • Barrel stays on the line.

What good looks like

The back ball knocks the front one off, and the bat stays level through both tees.

Safety

Hit into a net, and keep the tees far enough from it that balls do not bounce back at you.

Why this drill

A classic baseball tee drill that shows right away whether the barrel stays on the ball's path through contact.
