How to do the drill

  1. 1

Tuck a slightly flat soccer or playground ball into the bend of your back arm.

  2. 2

Get in your stance and load, keeping a light squeeze on the ball.

  3. 3

Swing at the tee ball at half speed. Turn your hips first and keep your hands close.

  4. 4

After contact, the soft ball should drop forward. If it drops early, swing slower.

  5. 5

Take 5 swings with the ball and 5 without, for 3 rounds. Count every hard hit up the middle out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Hips turn, hands close.
  • Hit the inside.
  • Ball drops toward the pitcher.

What good looks like

A short swing, the ball dropping forward, and hard contact up the middle.

Why this drill

The ball tells the player when the swing is wrong, so a parent does not have to.
