Softball and baseball hitting drill

Parent Front Toss

A front toss drill a parent can run at home. The parent tosses from behind a screen, so tee swings carry over to a moving ball.

3 rounds of 10 swings, 2–3 days a week
Equipment
  • Bat
  • Screen or net for the tosser
  • Bucket of wiffle or soft baseballs
  • Bucket to sit on
  • Hitting net or open yard

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Your partner kneels or sits on a bucket behind a screen 6–8 steps (12–15 feet) in front of you.

  2. 2

Get set. When they start a pitcher's motion, start your load.

  3. 3

They toss underhand into the strike zone. Hit it back up the middle.

  4. 4

Step out and reset between every toss. No rapid fire.

  5. 5

Do 3 rounds of 10. Count your hard hits up the middle out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • When they move, you move.
  • Back up the middle.
  • Reset between tosses.

What good looks like

Hard hits back at the screen, on time, with the same load as your tee swing.

Safety

The tosser must be behind a screen. Use soft or wiffle balls at home.

Why this drill
