Softball and baseball hitting drill

Tee Line Drives at a Target

One of the most useful baseball tee drills a player can do alone: hit line drives into a target on the net, so every tee swing has a goal and a check.

The video shows where to set the tee and doesn't use a target. Tape an X on your net and aim every line drive at it.

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Tape an X chest high on your net. Set the net 4–5 steps (8–10 feet) away.

  2. 2

Set the tee thigh high at the front of the plate, even with where your front foot lands.

  3. 3

Count "1-2" like the pitcher winding up, then load and swing for a line drive into the X.

  4. 4

Do 3 sets of 10. Count every line drive on or near the X; log your total out of 30.

  5. 5

For the last set, move the tee a little inside or outside.

Coaching cues

  • Wait for the pitcher.
  • Line drive every swing.
  • Barrel finishes at the pitcher.

What good looks like

Most balls hit the net near the X, rising a little, with the same rhythm every swing.

Safety

Use a 7 foot net and keep the tee far enough from it that balls do not bounce back at you. Use wiffle balls in tight spaces.

Why this drill

Tee work is the most recommended home hitting drill for baseball players. A target is what makes it useful: without one, every ball into the net feels like a good swing.
