Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
9–18
Time
15 minutes
Dose
20 hop shots and 20 one-two step shots, 3–5 days a week
Equipment
  • Basketball (size 5 through age 11, size 6 for ages 12–13 and girls 14+, size 7 for boys 14+)
  • Hoop
  • Chalk, a cone or a shoe to mark your spot

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Mark a spot 5–6 steps (10–12 feet) from the rim. Stand 2 steps behind it.

  2. 2

Spin the ball onto the spot with backspin so it bounces waist high.

  3. 3

Hop: catch it low as both feet land together, then go straight up. Either foot can pivot.

  4. 4

1-2 step: catch as your first foot lands (left for righties), then step and go up. That first foot is your pivot.

  5. 5

Shoot 10 hops, then 10 1-2 steps, twice through. Count every make. Log your total out of 40.

Coaching cues

  • Low before the catch.
  • Feet land with the ball.
  • Catch ready to shoot.

What good looks like

Your feet land as you catch, you go straight up with no extra dip, and land where you took off.

Safety

Spin the ball out on flat ground, away from the street and parked cars. Land on soft knees after every shot.

Why this drill

Most shots in a game come off a pass. Catching with your feet already set lets you shoot fast and on balance, and knowing your pivot foot keeps you from traveling.
