10 shots each: 1 dribble right, 1 dribble left, 2 dribbles right, 2 dribbles left, 3–4 days a week
Equipment
  • Basketball (size 5 through age 11, size 6 for ages 12–13 and girls 14+, size 7 for boys 14+)
  • Hoop
  • Chalk, cones or shoes to mark 3 spots

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Mark both elbows 6–7 steps (12–14 feet) from the rim, and a start spot 3–4 steps (6–8 feet) behind them, in the middle.

  2. 2

From the start spot, take one hard dribble to the right elbow with your right hand.

  3. 3

Stop with a jump stop (both feet together) or a 1-2 step, left foot first, then shoot.

  4. 4

Shoot 10 going right, then 10 going left (left hand, right foot first). Count every make.

  5. 5

Do 10 more each way with 2 dribbles, a step farther back. Log your total out of 40.

Coaching cues

  • Last dribble hard and low.
  • Stop, then rise.
  • Land where you took off.

What good looks like

Your feet stop under your shoulders, your chest faces the rim, and you land on the same spot.

Safety

Dribble only on smooth, dry ground, away from the street and parked cars. Land on soft knees.

Why this drill

The pull-up is how you score when a defender backs off to stop your drive. Stopping on balance is the hard part; after that it is the same shot you already practice.
