Time
15 minutes
Dose
30 pitches, 2–3 days a week
Equipment
  • Pitching net with a strike zone target (or a parent catcher)
  • Bucket of balls

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand about 18 steps (35 feet) from your target at 10U, 20 steps (40 feet) at 12U, or 22 steps (43 feet) at 14U and up.

  2. 2

Pick a small spot before every pitch.

  3. 3

Use the same rhythm and windup every time.

  4. 4

Throw 30 pitches, taking a breath after every 10. Count your strikes and log them out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Same rhythm every pitch.
  • Pick a small spot.
  • Finish tall to the target.

What good looks like

The windup looks the same every pitch, and misses stay close to the zone.

Safety

These 30 pitches count toward the day's pitch total. Skip it the day after games or tournaments. Pitch limits by age: 8–10 at most 50 in a day, 11–12 at most 65, 13–14 at most 80. Pain means stop.

Why this drill

Many parents already set a number of pitches for home practice. Counting strikes turns a bullpen into a goal.
