How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand 15–22 steps (30–45 feet) from a solid wall in your ready position.

  2. 2

Throw a tennis ball low at the wall so it comes back as a grounder.

  3. 3

Move your feet to get in front of it, glove down early and out front.

  4. 4

Watch it in and cover it with your throwing hand, then come up and throw again.

  5. 5

Mix slow rollers, high bounces and hard ones. Do 3 sets of 20 and count every clean field out of 60.

Coaching cues

  • Glove down early.
  • Field it out front.
  • See it into the glove.

What good looks like

Feet move before hands, the glove stays open and out front, and the rhythm stays even.

Safety

No hard balls against siding, garage doors or near windows. With a parent: they roll balls to you from 8–10 steps (about 15–20 feet).

Why this drill

The most recommended at-home fielding drill. A wall gives you hundreds of ground balls with no one else needed.
