How to use these baseball fielding drills
What these baseball fielding drills work on
- Infield: fielding the ball out front, picking short hops and a quick transfer from glove to throwing hand.
- Outfield: the drop step, the first move on a ball hit over a player's head, and running to the spot before looking up.
Where to start
- Start with wall ball ground balls. It is the best way to get ground balls at home.
- A glove, a tennis ball and a brick or concrete wall give an infielder hundreds of reps with no one else there.
- Tennis balls are softer than baseballs, which helps younger players who flinch or turn their head.
- Fly ball drills need a parent to toss and an open yard or park.
At team practice, draw a relay or bunt coverage in the baseball playmaker so players can see who receives the throw and who covers the base.
Reps and how often
- Plan on 20 to 60 reps per drill, in sets short enough that the player stays low and moves his feet on every ball.
- Two drills fit in a 15 to 20 minute session, four or five days a week.
- Follow fielding work with the throwing drills so the catch and the throw get practiced together.
Baseball fielding drills FAQ
What are good baseball infield drills to do at home?
Wall ball ground balls, short hops from the knees and quick glove-to-hand transfers all work with a glove, a tennis ball and a wall. They cover fielding the ball out front, picking short hops and getting rid of the ball fast.
What are good baseball outfield drills for fly balls?
Start with the drop step. A parent points left or right and tosses a tennis ball over that shoulder, and the player opens his hip and runs to the spot before looking up. It teaches the first step on a ball hit over his head. Do it in an open yard or park.
How do I get better at fielding ground balls at home?
Throw a tennis ball low at a wall from 10–15 steps away and field it as it comes back. Move your feet to get in front of it, keep the glove down and out front, and cover the ball with your throwing hand. Three sets of 20, a few days a week, adds up to a lot of ground balls.
