Basketball footwork drill

Jump Stop and Pivot Drill

A jump stop lands on both feet at once so either foot can be your pivot foot. This drill adds front and reverse pivots on each foot, with no travel.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
6–18
Time
8 minutes
Dose
20 reps (10 on each pivot foot), 3–5 days a week
Equipment
  • Basketball (size 5 through age 11, size 6 for ages 12–13 and girls 14+, size 7 for boys 14+)
  • Chalk, tape or a cone to mark a spot
  • Flat, smooth space about 8 steps (16 feet) long; no hoop needed

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Mark a spot 5 steps (10 feet) away and dribble to it.

  2. 2

Pick up the ball, hop, and land on both feet together, knees bent. Freeze with the ball under your chin.

  3. 3

Pivot on the ball of your left foot: front pivot halfway around and back, then reverse pivot halfway and back.

  4. 4

Count a rep clean if you land with no extra step and your pivot foot never slides or lifts.

  5. 5

Do 10, then switch to your right foot as the pivot and do 10. Log your clean reps out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Both feet land together.
  • Stay low and freeze.
  • Pivot on the ball of your foot.

What good looks like

You stop without sliding, stay low with the ball protected, and your pivot foot turns in the same spot.

Safety

Do this on smooth, dry ground only, away from parked cars and never in the street. Indoors, clear space away from furniture and walls.

Why this drill

Most youth travels happen right after a player stops dribbling. A balanced jump stop and clean pivots let you stop under control, protect the ball and turn to pass or shoot.
