How to do the drill
- 1
Set a chair at the elbow, 7 steps (14 feet) from the basket. Stand 3 steps (6 feet) behind it.
- 2
Toss the ball out with backspin and catch it in a jump stop. Ball on your hip, knees bent, eyes on the rim.
- 3
Pivot on your left foot (lefties: right) and jab a short half step at the chair with the other foot.
- 4
Do 10 jab-and-shoots, 10 jab-and-goes (long step past the chair, drive for a layup), then 10 mixed.
- 5
Count a rep clean if your pivot foot stays down until the ball leaves your hand. Log your clean reps out of 30.
Coaching cues
- Ball on the hip.
- Short jab, long go.
- Ball out, then pivot foot.
What good looks like
You catch low and on balance, jab short and sharp, and keep your pivot foot still until the ball is gone.
Safety
Dribble on smooth, dry ground only, away from parked cars and never in the street. Use a sturdy chair or cone that won't tip onto your feet.
Why this drill
Triple threat keeps the defender guessing, and the jab step makes them react first. Most young players catch and start dribbling right away; this drill teaches them to read the defender and to take the first step without traveling.
