Set up 6 cones even if the video uses a different number, and time your both-feet runs.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
6–18
Time
10 minutes
Dose
4 slow warm-up runs, then 6 timed runs through the cones and back, 2–4 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • 6 cones or markers (shoes or water bottles work)
  • Open grass or turf about 15 steps (30 feet) long
  • Timer (a phone works)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set 6 cones in a line, 2 steps (about 4 feet) apart.

  2. 2

Weave through and back using only your right foot. Then do it with only your left.

  3. 3

Do each foot twice, slowly, keeping the ball close.

  4. 4

Now race it 6 times with both feet. Time each run through and back.

  5. 5

Count a run only if you pass every cone and knock none over. Log your fastest time.

Coaching cues

  • Little touches.
  • Use both sides of the foot.
  • Look up at the end.

What good looks like

The ball stays within a step of you and you weave every cone without touching one.

Safety

Use flat cones or soft markers you can't trip over, and set up away from the street, parked cars and windows.

Why this drill

Weaving through cones trains quick changes of direction and close control on both feet, which is what you need to dribble through a crowd of players.
