Time
8 minutes
Dose
8 rounds of 30 seconds (in place and moving, each foot), 3–5 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • Open grass or turf about 10 steps (20 feet) long
  • Timer (a phone works)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand next to the ball with it just outside your right foot.

  2. 2

Tap it in with the inside of your right foot, then back out with the outside. Hop on your left foot.

  3. 3

Go 30 seconds in place. Count every touch.

  4. 4

Next round, do the same touches while moving forward 10 steps (20 feet) and back.

  5. 5

Switch to your left foot and repeat. Do it all twice and log your best round.

Coaching cues

  • Small, soft touches.
  • Ball stays under you.
  • Eyes up often.

What good looks like

Quick little taps that keep the ball within a step of you, on either foot.

Safety

Use flat ground with no holes, and keep the moving rounds away from the street and parked cars. Indoors, use the in-place rounds only.

Why this drill

Using both the inside and outside of each foot lets you move the ball either way at any moment. That close control is the base of good dribbling.
