The video has no cone and also shows an outside-heel version of the move. Practice the outside-then-inside version from the steps, dribbling at a cone.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
10–18
Time
12 minutes
Dose
10 slow walk-throughs, then 30 elasticos at a cone (15 each foot), 3 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • 1 cone or marker (a shoe works)
  • Open, flat space (yard, park or driveway)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set a cone 10 steps (about 20 feet) away. Walk through the move 10 times, very slowly.

  2. 2

Dribble slowly at the cone with the ball on your right foot.

  3. 3

Push the ball right with the outside of your foot, then wrap it back left with the inside.

  4. 4

Do 15 with your right foot and 15 with your left. Count each one where your foot stays with the ball. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Outside, then inside.
  • Foot stays on the ball.
  • Sell the first push.

What good looks like

The ball moves out and back in one smooth motion without your foot leaving it.

Safety

Go slowly until the move feels smooth, since the quick outside-to-inside flick can twist an ankle. Wear sneakers or cleats on grass or a flat surface.

Why this drill

The elastico makes a defender lean one way before you go the other. It is an advanced move, so slow walk-throughs build the footwork before you add speed.
