How to do the drill
- 1
Set the tee thigh high, 4 steps (8 feet) from the net.
- 2
Tape 4 lines across the net: line 1 level with the ball, then half a bat, one bat and a bat and a half higher.
- 3
Swing hard 3 times at each line, going up from line 1 to line 4, then back down.
- 4
Change the height with where you meet the ball, not with swing speed.
- 5
Count every ball closest to the line you picked. Log your total out of 24.
Coaching cues
- Pick your line first.
- Same speed every swing.
- Hit it flush.
What good looks like
Hard contact every swing, and the ball climbs a line at a time going up.
Safety
Hit into a net with nobody behind it. Keep the tee far enough from the net that balls do not bounce back at you, and use wiffle balls in tight spaces.
Why this drill
Hitters who pop up often cannot feel where the barrel meets the ball. Aiming at a different height on purpose, with the same hard swing, builds that feel and lets a hitter hit a line drive on purpose.
