How to use these softball hitting drills
Softball hitting problems these drills fix
- Lunging at the ball.
- Casting the hands away from the body.
- Rolling over.
- A swing that looks good off the tee but falls apart against live pitching.
Each drill has a short video clip, numbered steps and one result to count, like line drives on target out of 30 swings.
Where to start
- Start with tee line drives at a target.
- Add stride, pause, swing for a hitter who lunges.
- Move to the two tee drill and front toss once contact is consistent.
What you need for hitting drills at home
- A batting tee, a hitting net and a bucket of balls cover four of the five drills, so a player can do them alone in the backyard or garage.
- Front toss needs a parent to toss from behind a screen.
- In a small space, use wiffle balls.
How many swings and how often
- Twenty to thirty good swings per drill is enough. Once a player gets tired the swing gets sloppy, so stop there.
- Two drills make a 20-minute session.
- Three or four sessions a week between practices is a good target.
Softball hitting drills FAQ
What are good softball hitting drills for beginners?
Start with tee work. Tee line drives at a target gives every swing a goal, and stride, pause, swing teaches a young hitter to stay balanced instead of lunging. Both work for players as young as 7 or 8. Add front toss with a parent once the player makes solid contact off the tee.
How can I practice softball hitting at home?
A batting tee, a hitting net and a bucket of balls are enough for most home hitting drills. Set the net 8–10 feet from the tee, tape a target on it and take 20–30 swings per drill. Use wiffle balls in a garage or small yard.
How many swings should a softball player take a day?
For home practice, 50–100 focused swings spread over two or three drills is plenty for most youth players. Each drill on this page lists its sets, like 3 sets of 10 swings, so a player knows when she is done.
What is the two tee drill in softball?
Two tees are set up in a line: the player hits the ball on the back tee and swings through without touching the ball on the front tee. It shows right away whether the barrel stays in the zone or rolls over. See the two tee drill for setup and reps.
