She sets a small tee just under and behind the main one. Leave about a forearm's length between them so the drill has room to show a dropped barrel.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
9–18
Time
12 minutes
Dose
3 rounds of 10 swings, 3 days a week
Equipment
  • 2 batting tees, or 1 tee and a bucket
  • Bat
  • 10 or more balls
  • Hitting net or an open field

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set the front tee mid-plate, thigh high. That's the ball you hit.

  2. 2

Set the back tee a forearm's length behind it, lower, so its ball's top matches the front ball's bottom.

  3. 3

Take a slow swing and watch the barrel pass over the back ball.

  4. 4

Swing full speed for a line drive up the middle, keeping the barrel above the back ball.

  5. 5

Count every line drive that leaves the back ball on its tee. Do 3 rounds of 10. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Hands above the barrel.
  • Back shoulder up.
  • Line drive up the middle.

What good looks like

The back ball stays on its tee and the front ball goes out on a line.

Safety

Hit into a net or an open field with nobody in front of you. Knocking the back ball off is safe, but check that nobody is standing near the tees.

Why this drill

Most pop-ups start when the hands or the back shoulder drop, so the barrel comes in under the ball. The back tee sits right where a dropped barrel travels, so the hitter knows on every swing whether the bat stayed on a good path.
