The first part is the flamingo version. The rest is the stride, freeze and swing.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
7–18
Time
8 minutes
Dose
2 sets of 10 swings, 3–4 days a week
Equipment
  • Batting tee
  • Bat
  • Hitting net
  • Softballs or wiffle balls

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set the tee in the middle of the plate and get in your stance.

  2. 2

Load: shift to your back leg and move your hands back a little.

  3. 3

Stride and freeze with your front heel down for "one-two," weight back, hands back.

  4. 4

Swing from there. Do 2 sets of 10 and count every balanced finish out of 20.

  5. 5

When it's easy, try the flamingo: balance on your back leg 2–3 seconds, then stride and swing.

Coaching cues

  • Stay in your legs.
  • Heel down, hands back.
  • Balanced over your back leg.

What good looks like

A balanced finish you can hold for 2 seconds, with your head over your belly button.

Safety

If you mark your stride, use a towel or tape on the ground. A bucket or board under the foot can roll an ankle.

Why this drill

Parents and coaches say taking the rush out of the stride is the quickest fix for young hitters who lunge.
