Solo, no partner needed
Ages

Time
10 minutes
Dose
3 sets of 10 passes, 3–4 days a week
Equipment
  • Basketball (size 5 through age 11, size 6 for ages 12–13 and girls 14+, size 7 for boys 14+)
  • Painter's tape or chalk
  • Brick or concrete wall with smooth, flat ground in front of it

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand 5 steps (10 feet) from a wall and put tape on it at waist height.

  2. 2

Mark a spot on the ground about 3 steps (7 feet) in front of you.

  3. 3

Hold the ball at your chest, step, and push it down onto the spot, finishing thumbs down.

  4. 4

Catch it with two hands. Count every pass that bounces on the spot and hits near the tape.

  5. 5

Do 3 sets of 10. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Two-thirds of the way.
  • Step and push, thumbs down.
  • Arrive at the waist.

What good looks like

One firm bounce on the spot, and the ball comes up waist high and straight back to your hands.

Safety

Pass against brick or concrete, away from windows, garage doors and siding. Use smooth, dry ground so the ball bounces true.

Why this drill

A bounce pass slips under a defender's hands, which is why players use it to feed the post and hit cutters. Where it bounces decides whether it is easy to catch, and that only comes from reps.
