  • Painter's tape or chalk
  • Brick or concrete wall with flat ground in front of it

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Tape a shoulder-wide square on a wall at chest height. Stand 4–5 steps (8–10 feet) away, or 3 if you're under 9.

  2. 2

Hold the ball at your chest: fingers on the sides, thumbs behind, elbows in.

  3. 3

Step toward the wall and push with both arms, finishing thumbs down, palms out.

  4. 4

Catch it with two hands, bring it to your chest, and pass again. Count every pass inside the square.

  5. 5

Do 5 sets of 10, switching your stepping foot each set. Log your total out of 50.

Coaching cues

  • Step and push.
  • Thumbs down, palms out.
  • Hit the square.

What good looks like

The ball flies flat into the square and comes straight back, and your arms finish straight with thumbs down.

Safety

Pass against brick or concrete, away from windows, garage doors and siding. If the ball gets away, let it go rather than chasing it into the street.

Why this drill

The chest pass is the pass players make most in a game. A wall is a partner that never gets tired, and the square turns every pass into a rep you can count.
