3 rounds of 30 seconds standing, then 4 trips through the cones, 3–5 days a week

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set 5 cones (or shoes) in a line, 2 steps (4 feet) apart.

  2. 2

Get low, feet wide. Bounce the ball from your right hand to your left, below your knees.

  3. 3

Cross it back and forth for 30 seconds, eyes up. Count every clean crossover. Do 3 rounds and log your best.

  4. 4

At each cone, plant the foot on your ball side, cross the ball over and push off past the cone.

  5. 5

Go down and back 4 times. Walk it first, then jog.

Coaching cues

  • Low and quick.
  • Plant and push off.
  • Eyes up.

What good looks like

The ball crosses below your knees in one bounce and your body changes direction with it.

Safety

Dribble on smooth, dry ground only, away from parked cars and never in the street. Indoors, clear space away from furniture, TVs and windows.

Why this drill

The crossover is the first move most players learn and the one they use most. A low, quick crossover changes direction before a defender can reach the ball.
