How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand on the right side of the rim, 1–2 steps from the backboard.

  2. 2

Toss the ball high off the backboard toward the left side of the rim.

  3. 3

Slide over, jump off both feet and catch it two-handed at the top.

  4. 4

Land wide with knees bent and pull the ball tight under your chin, elbows out.

  5. 5

Do 3 sets of 10, tossing from where you land. Count every two-hand catch at the top. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Two hands at the top.
  • Land wide and strong.
  • Chin it, elbows out.

What good looks like

You catch it above your head, land balanced on two feet, and bring it straight to your chin.

Safety

Land on both feet with soft knees. Keep your elbows out but don't swing them. Don't grab the rim, and make sure a portable hoop's base is weighted.

Why this drill

Rebounds go to the player who goes up with two hands and holds on. Catching high and chinning the ball keeps other players from knocking it loose.
