The video has someone throwing to the keeper. On your own, throw the ball off a wall and catch the rebound.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
7–18
Time
10 minutes
Dose
30 catches (10 W, 10 basket, 10 scoop), 3–5 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • Brick or concrete wall or a rebounder (with a parent's OK)
  • Goalkeeper gloves (optional)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand 4 steps (8 feet) from the wall: feet apart, knees bent, hands up.

  2. 2

Throw the ball at the wall chest high. Catch it with thumbs touching in a W.

  3. 3

Throw lower so it comes back at your belly. Scoop it into your chest.

  4. 4

Roll it hard at the wall. Get down behind it and scoop it up.

  5. 5

Do 10 of each. Count every clean catch with no drop or bobble. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Thumbs together.
  • Catch in front.
  • Hug it in.

What good looks like

The ball sticks in your hands without a bounce off your fingers.

Safety

Use a wall only if a parent says it's OK, pick brick or concrete, and stay away from windows, garage doors and the street. Throw with medium pace so the rebound stays catchable.

Why this drill

Most saves are simple catches. A goalkeeper who holds on to the ball gives no rebounds for the other team to score.
