How to do the drill
- 1
Set two cones 4 big steps (about 8 feet) apart. Stand between them holding the ball.
- 2
Get in your ready stance: feet shoulder-width, knees bent, ball at your chest.
- 3
Shuffle sideways to the right cone without crossing your feet. Stop and set your feet.
- 4
Bounce the ball hard in front of you and catch it with both hands. Shuffle to the left cone and repeat.
- 5
Count every clean catch made with your feet set. Log your total out of 30.
Coaching cues
- Side steps, feet apart.
- Set, then catch.
- Stay low.
What good looks like
Your feet never cross, you are stopped and balanced at each cone, and the ball sticks in your hands.
Safety
Use flat, dry ground with room around the cones. Bounce the ball a step in front of you so it comes up to your chest, not your face.
Why this drill
Goalkeepers make easier saves when they get across the goal and set their feet before the shot. Shuffling keeps you balanced so you can push off either way.
