How to do the drill
- 1
Kneel on soft grass. Set the ball on the ground a big step to your right.
- 2
Fall sideways onto your hip and side. Pin the ball with one hand behind it, one on top.
- 3
Set the ball on your left and dive that way. Do 5 each side.
- 4
Do 5 each side from a low squat, then 5 each side standing.
- 5
Count dives where you land on your side holding the ball. Log your total out of 30.
Coaching cues
- Land on your side.
- Hands to the ball.
- Eyes on the ball.
What good looks like
You land on your hip and side with both hands on the ball and your eyes on it.
Safety
Dive only on soft grass or a thick mat, never on concrete, pavement or hard floors. Land on your side, not your elbow or belly. Long sleeves help on dry grass. Stop if a shoulder or hip hurts.
Why this drill
Diving the right way keeps goalkeepers safe and lets them reach balls near the posts. Starting low takes away the fear of falling and builds a soft landing before you add height.
