The video uses two tennis balls. Start with one ball; try two only once you can catch 60 in a row.

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
8–18
Time
8 minutes
Dose
3 rounds of 60 seconds (right hand, left hand, alternating), 4–6 days a week
Equipment
  • Tennis ball
  • Brick or concrete wall (with a parent's OK)
  • Timer (a phone works)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand 3 steps (6 feet) from the wall in your ready stance, hands up.

  2. 2

Throw the tennis ball at the wall with your right hand. Catch it with the same hand.

  3. 3

Keep going for 60 seconds. Count every catch.

  4. 4

Do 60 seconds with your left hand, then 60 seconds switching hands each throw.

  5. 5

    Log your best round.

Coaching cues

  • Stay on your toes.
  • Soft hands.
  • Watch it into your hand.

What good looks like

Quick, steady throws and catches without the ball hitting the ground.

Safety

Use a tennis ball only, and a wall only if a parent says it's OK. Pick brick or concrete, stay away from windows and the street, and keep the area around your feet clear.

Why this drill

A small, fast ball trains your eyes and hands to react quicker. Catching a soccer ball feels easier after this, and it works any day with no partner.
