Dose
10 slow walk-throughs, then 30 croquetas at a cone (15 each way), 3 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • 2 cones or markers (shoes work)
  • Open, flat space (yard, park or driveway)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set two cones 10 steps (about 20 feet) apart. Start at one.

  2. 2

Dribble slowly toward the other cone with your right foot.

  3. 3

One step before the cone, tap the ball across to your left foot with the inside of your right.

  4. 4

Push it past the cone with the inside of your left foot and keep going.

  5. 5

Do 15 this way and 15 starting left. Count each one where the ball stays close. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Two quick touches.
  • Ball across your body.
  • Stay low.

What good looks like

The ball goes foot to foot in one quick motion and you glide past the cone without stopping.

Safety

Practice on grass or a clear, flat surface away from the street. Use flat cones or shoes so nothing is in the way if you step on it.

Why this drill

La Croqueta moves the ball sideways out of a defender's reach in a split second. It is simple enough to use in games right away, and it trains quick touches with both feet.
