Time

Dose
Walk-throughs, then 10 step overs each way, 2–4 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • 1 cone or marker (a shoe works)
  • Open grass or turf about 15 steps (30 feet) long

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set a cone 10 steps (about 20 feet) away. Dribble toward it.

  2. 2

A big step before it, circle your right foot around the front of the ball, left to right.

  3. 3

Land that foot past the ball and dip your right shoulder.

  4. 4

Push the ball left with the outside of your left foot and speed away.

  5. 5

Walk it 5 times, then do 10 with each foot. Count the ones where the ball stays close and log your total out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Circle around the ball.
  • Drop your shoulder.
  • Burst away.

What good looks like

Your foot circles the ball without touching it, your shoulder sells the fake, and you push away fast the other way.

Safety

Go slowly at first so you don't step on the ball and roll your ankle. Use flat grass or turf, away from the street.

Why this drill

The step over makes a defender lean the wrong way. That gives you the half second you need to dribble past them.
