Basketball finishing drill

Floater

The floater is a soft, high shot from the lane that goes over taller defenders before they can reach it. This drill teaches it off one foot and two.

The video has no chair. Put a chair in front of the rim so you have something to float the ball over.

Dose
10 form floaters, then 3 sets of 10 (one-foot, two-foot, mixed), 2–4 days a week

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Put a chair in the lane 2 steps (4 feet) in front of the rim.

  2. 2

Warm up: 10 one-hand floaters from 4 steps (8 feet), released early and high over the chair.

  3. 3

Set 1: 2 right-hand dribbles from the free throw line. Pick up the ball as your right foot lands, then left foot and up.

  4. 4

Set 2: dribble in the same way into a jump stop, both feet landing together 4 steps (8 feet) out. Go straight up.

  5. 5

Set 3: mix both, from both sides. Do 10 per set, counting every make. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Jump up, release early.
  • High and soft.
  • Follow through to the rim.

What good looks like

The ball goes well above the chair and drops softly in, and you jump up instead of into the chair.

Safety

Keep the chair far enough out that you won't land on it, and land with soft knees. Don't hang on the rim.

Why this drill

Once players get taller, a regular layup gets blocked. The floater lets a smaller player score from the lane before the shot-blocker can reach the ball.
