How to do the drill
- 1
Stand 4 steps (8 feet) out on the right side. Walk in 5 times saying "right, left, up."
- 2
Jump off your left foot, right knee up, right hand to the top corner of the square.
- 3
Now take one right-hand dribble. Pick up the ball as your right foot lands, then left foot and up.
- 4
Do 10 from there and 10 dribbling in from the wing, 7 steps (14 feet) out. Count every make.
- 5
Switch to the left side ("left, right, up," left hand) and repeat. Log your total makes out of 40.
Coaching cues
- Right, left, up.
- Same-side knee and hand.
- Top corner of the square.
What good looks like
Your last step is the foot opposite your shooting hand, you jump up, and the ball kisses the backboard softly.
Safety
Land on both feet with soft knees and keep your momentum from carrying you into a wall, fence or pole behind the hoop. Don't hang on the rim, and check that a portable hoop's base is weighted.
Why this drill
A layup is the easiest shot in basketball only when the feet are right. Learning the two steps slowly, on both sides, stops the travels and wrong-foot layups that cost young players easy points.
