Basketball finishing drill

Reverse Layup

The reverse layup finishes on the far side of the rim, using the rim to keep the ball away from a shot blocker. This drill builds it from a standstill.

Equipment
  • Basketball (size 5 through age 11, size 6 for ages 12–13 and girls 14+, size 7 for boys 14+)
  • Hoop with a backboard and some room under it (9-foot rim for ages 9–11)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Start on the left side, 4 steps (8 feet) from the basket, close to the baseline.

  2. 2

Walk it 5 times: right foot just before the rim, left foot under it, jump off your left foot.

  3. 3

Finish on the right side with your right hand, right knee up, high off the backboard.

  4. 4

Dribble in with your left hand. Pick up the ball as your right foot lands, then left foot and up.

  5. 5

Do 10 and count every make. Switch sides for 10 left-handed, then 10 switching every rep. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Under, then up.
  • High on the far side.
  • Let the rim protect it.

What good looks like

You go under the rim with no extra step and the ball goes softly off the far side of the backboard.

Safety

Keep your head clear of the rim and the bottom edge of the backboard when you pass under it, and check there is room behind the hoop to land. Land with soft knees and don't hang on the rim.

Why this drill

When a defender cuts off a baseline drive, the reverse layup lets you use the rim to protect the shot. It is a common finish once players can make regular layups on both sides.
