How to use these basketball finishing drills
Finishing problems these drills fix
- Taking off on the wrong foot.
- Only finishing with the strong hand.
- Shooting layups too hard off the backboard.
- Getting blocked by a taller defender at the rim.
Where to start
- Every player starts with layup footwork: the one-two step on both sides of the basket.
- Then give the weak side its own drill with left-handed layups.
- Add the reverse layup, the euro step and the floater once regular layups are automatic.
What you need
- A hoop with a backboard and room for two or three steps and a dribble on each side.
- A chair or cone makes a good stand-in defender for the euro step and floater.
Basketball finishing drills FAQ
How do you do a layup step by step?
From the right side: step right, step left, jump off the left foot and lift the right knee, then lay the ball off the backboard with the right hand. From the left side it is the mirror image. Layup footwork breaks it into steps you can practice without a dribble first.
How do I get better at left-handed layups?
Practice them on their own, slowly, until the footwork is automatic: right foot, left foot, jump off the right and lift the left knee. Left-handed layups starts from a standstill close to the basket and builds up to full speed.
Is the euro step a travel?
No. After gathering the ball, a player may take two steps. The euro step uses those two steps in different directions. It becomes a travel when a player takes a third step or drags the pivot foot. See the euro step drill for the footwork.
