How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand 2 steps (4 feet) out on the left side, left foot forward (lefties: mirror it on the right).

  2. 2

Step with your right foot, jump off it with your left knee up, and lay it in with your left hand.

  3. 3

Do 10 from there. Count every make.

  4. 4

From 4 steps (8 feet), take one left-hand dribble. Pick up the ball as your left foot lands, then right foot and up.

  5. 5

Do 10 from there and 10 dribbling in from the wing, 7 steps (14 feet) out. Log your total makes out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Left, right, up.
  • Left knee, left hand.
  • Soft off the square.

What good looks like

You jump off your right foot every time and lay it in softly with your left hand.

Safety

Land on both feet with soft knees and keep clear of walls, fences or poles behind the hoop. Don't hang on the rim, and check that a portable hoop's base is weighted.

Why this drill

Most young players only finish with their strong hand, so defenders just take that side away. A left-handed layup from the left side keeps your body between the defender and the ball.
